Can dor obliges me to say that at first I doubted the benefit j of absolute prohibition, thinking a rigid sys tem of licenses sufficient ; But the Legislature has passed the lav,and I must take one side or the other. I should be false to the 1,400,000 people of North Carolina if I re mained silent, and I must take my position. I In taking it I i propose to do iust as I have done in all pub-1 lie Questions since I first took offi- ce, I have always, God knows, takeaa stand for the best interests of North Carolina, and I ! propose to meet this question in the same way. I never walk these streets or ride over the State but I ice mel ancholy victims of intemperance.
